The Axalara T9 has a number of fun and interesting mechanical features that really work. There are doors that open and the three tail pieces open and close in response to turning knobs. It took my 7 year old son all day to build it; he made one critical error (the mechanism that moves the tail fins wasn't centered properly) and a couple minor ones that I was able to fix after studying the instructions. This is one of the few lego projects he hasn't wanted to take apart after a week or two; he enjoys playing with the completed spaceship. It's pretty big - a good two feet long - and it takes up a lot of space on top of his bookshelf. This is definitely an advanced project and probably not for someone new to Legos or Bionicle. That said, no other building toy has the precision of Legos and if you follow the instructions carefully, they will always go together properly. Overall, highly recommended.

I am 11 years old and I put this together in 2 and a half hours. There are plenty of moving features. This product is fun.

I purchased this for my 7-year-old son, who had bought a few of the smaller Bionicle sets and had completed them within an hour or so. I was a bit concerned that this 693 piece set might be a bit over his head, but he completed it in about 5-6 hours spanning two days. He's now disassembled / reassembled it twice since then, and this remains one of his favorite toys. Though certainly not inexpensive, it seems to be a decent value compared to some of the other Lego products, and least when you compare price vs. entertainment value.
One thing not touched on in the other reviews: our set was missing several long pieces, and I decided to contact Lego customer service rather than returning the entire thing since it was already pretty much put together. After supplying the part number(s) needed, Lego got us the missing pieces within about 3 business days, which I thought was quite fast and made my son happy.
Overall, a great product and worth the investment.

Axalara T9 took our 10 year old about five hours to build. I helped put all the pieces in order according to size and function. This was the only assistance he received and it really helped to streamline construction. I did not hear one complaint or sigh of frustration during the entire process.
He hasn't put the Axalara T9 down since he finished the project. He carries it around the house and explains the mechanisms behind the moving parts to anyone willing to listen. The moving parts are a BIG attraction and a lot of fun for a 10 year old, especially when they are the one to construct the piece.
This piece does have 3 instruction booklets. So my recommendation would be that this should not be the first Bionicle your child has ever constructed. Start with a small to medium sized Bionicle so the child can get a basic understanding of how the Bionicle pieces work together.
