I actually bought this for my small cousin's birthday, but I think I will have to buy another set for my sons! It looks like a lot of fun to build as a family, and since there are three creatures to build, it should keep us busy for awhile.

Really, you can't go wrong with Lego. The pieces are durable, colorful, and withstand the test of time. My son got this kit for his 5th birthday. He is a little younger than the stated age range on the box, but the instruction booklet is so well designed and easy to follow that with some guidance from mom and dad, he was able to put the figures together with no problems. It's actually a good learning experience for him to see how far he can get with the instructions before asking for a little help.
This kit makes 3 different types of creatures: a spider, a snake, and some other bug (a scorpion maybe?). It took us about an hour or so to put together the spider, but we were going slow and taking our time. The lego pieces included in the kit even allow you to move the spider's legs into different positions. The snake is also really cool with a moveable body and mouth. We haven't done the other creature yet, but are expecting the same great results. The kit comes with enough pieces to make one of these creatures at a time.
The only thing I would change (and it's the same for all lego kits) is that I wish these kits came with their own tupperware type of storage container to keep the different kits separate. I suppose you can use any old tupperware though and create your own storage. We end up dumping the pieces in with our LEGO Ultimate Building Set. The differnent kits end up getting mixed together, but the bin keeps them all in one place.
Definitely recommend this kit for the creepy creature lover in your family!
