"Improve fine motor skills for your little ones" 2008-12-16

Good for improving fine motor skills for the little ones. It would've been so much better if the building instructions (which you use as a design template under the plastic transparent baseplate) were laminated. Since the building instruction is made of paper it's easily torn and/or get damaged. I end up using adhesive laminate to laminate all of my lego's paper instructions.

 "Save the instructions!" 2008-08-14
By H. Johnson (New England, USA)
My six year old has had this for a year now and very much enjoys playing with it. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much she like to create the mosaics directly from the instructions with zero room for creativity. When I accidentally threw away the instructions, she was heartbroken.

The mosaic set is great for both creative kids and, like my daughter, kids who would prefer to follow directions. Its educational value is limited - kids can work on manual dexterity and artistic creativity - but it offers unlimited fun.

The mosaic toy is as durable as any other Lego products; the toy itself is unparalleled in durability, but its instructions need to be preserved carefully.

 "Fun with added value" 2008-01-22
By writeonmama (Indiana)
This was a great toy that all of my kids (5,8,11) could work on. The 5 year old wandered a bit -- couldn't do the whole picture in one sitting. But that could just be his personality. You can go to Lego.com and print out additional seasonal patterns, which I think is a great added bonus.

 "A proven winner" 2007-11-13
By K. K. Giannini (Munster, IN USA)
My kids, ages 5 and 7, have had this toy for nearly a year. It never gets put away because they are always creating new designs, both ones from the booklet and ones they've made up. They love the designs so well I've had to take digital photos of each one before they'll break it up to build a new one. I'm looking to upgrade to the larger set now since I know they'll play with it.

 "Great for Occupational Therapists" 2007-09-14
By L. Perry (Denver)
As a pediatric occupational therapist I can tell you that my kids LOVE working with these. They help develop fine motor skills as it requires a fine pincer grasp. The kids can slide the pattern underneath the clear baseplate and follow the pattern (easy) or they can use the pattern as a model, set to the side, and count how far over to place the pieces and how many of each color (harder). These can be great for developing in-hand manipulation skills as well, where I ask them to "squirrel away" multiple pieces in the palm of their hands and move a Lego one by one up to their fingertips, placing them onto the baseplate, without dropping any. There are so many ways (as a therapist) that I can use these to challenge the kids that I work with. Another therapist showed them to me and I bought a set right away. My only regret is not finding out about them sooner. :)
